BOROUGH OF NEWTOWN
NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT

Minutes of the Annual Meeting of the Borough Board of Burgesses on Tuesday, September 8. 2008 at Town Hall South, Newtown.  Warden James Gaston called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.

Present:  Warden James Gaston, Senior Burgess Joan Crick, Second Senior Burgess Jay
            Maher, Treasurer and Burgess Marie Walker, Tax Collector Jodie Enriquez,
            Burgess Betsy Kenyon, Clerk and Burgess Darlene Spencer

Absent:   Zoning Officer Jean St. Jean and Burgess Anthony Baiad

       Warden Gaston stated that the purpose of this meeting is to hear and accept the annual reports.

        Clerk Spencer read the annual reports for the following departments:  Building, Zoning, Engineering, Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Conservation.  The Historic District Commission report was received and will be read during the special meeting to follow the annual meeting.

        Burgess Kenyon made a motion to accept the year-end reports, seconded by Burgess Walker and unanimously approved.

        Warden Gaston highlighted a few of the events of the past 2008-09 fiscal year.  He commended Second Senior Burgess Maher for his continued work on the Streetscape Sidewalk Repair Project.  He stressed the importance of the passing of the Borough of Newtown Farmers’ Markets, Art Shows, and Antique Shows Ordinance.  Congratulations were extended to all who were re-elected in the Borough’s election.  Warden Gaston indicated that there has been smart commercial development in the Borough and taxes have been kept low.  He further said that, as we look to next year, we hope to continue to minimize taxes, work toward the completion of the Streetscape Sidewalk Project, and hopefully move along on the Queen Street Sidewalk Project.  In addition, the Borough office will be moving into the Edmond Town Hall.  Warden Gaston stated that it has been a pleasure to work with the Burgesses and looks forward to the year ahead.
        
        Burgess Kenyon commended Warden Gaston on his outstanding leadership, the Board agreed.

        There being no further business, Burgess Kenyon made a motion to adjourn the Annual Meeting at 7:55 p.m., seconded by Burgess Walker and unanimously approved.
